About the Kasei Project

The Kasei Initiative is a project that was originally going to be a native speaking robot to help people learn a new language.  Although I'm not officially scrapping the idea, this is quite ambtious for the time being.  Instead, I have decided to tackle two problems: lonliness and affordable robotics.  Several studies have shown that loneliness can lead to serious health conditions such as cancer and an early death, and this is a serious issue that seems to go unnoticed.  As such, I thought, "How about a companion robot?"  Thus, the Kasei Project was officially born.

The Kasei Initiative will start with one robot (my robot, name pending), and with any luck, will continue on from there.  The brains will be the low-cost Raspberry Pi B+, and the parts will be from electronics that I scrap from yard sales and from the side of the road.  In fact, the most expensive portion will be the screen (around $56).  With miscellaneous costs, the whole project will be around the $100 range, which, if successful, isn't too shabby for a personal robot.

How can we downsize this?  Well, at the moment, I have to work with what I can, and so I can't really change much at this point.  However, if this project wins, I will continue this project with the new funds to make it even more cost effective.
